How does it work?

Unlike conventional mechanical drive loaders, the engine in a diesel-electric wheeled loader such as the LeTourneau L-1850 is able to operate at a constant RPM.  This means that the ongoing acceleration and braking of massive rotating engine components associated with mechanical drive is eliminated.  With these fuel-robbing inertial factors greatly lowered, fuel burn is significantly reduced.
